You know, there’s a whole lot more to being a good mom besides giving kisses and hugs. There are so many things to get right! Some days the lists seem endless. Even with diet alone, there are myriad choices. It’s really significant that kids get the right amount of vitamins, minerals and calcium during the important growing years. Picky eaters like my Sam can make getting the best nutrition difficult.
For example, calcium is essential for building strong bones plus it helps muscles, nerves and hormones to function at their best, but our bodies don’t produce calcium. We have to get it from our diet. When we don’t get enough, our body takes the calcium from our bones. Greens like collard, kale and broccoli are some of the sources of calcium but they sure are not on Sam’s list of favorite foods.
Dean Foods Company has just introduced TruMoo Calcium Plus Low-Fat Chocolate Milk to its line of dairy products. TruMoo Calcium Plus milk has no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial growth hormones and no artificial sweeteners AND it’s made with 50% more calcium per serving than regular low-fat white milk. Sam definitely likes to drink chocolate milk. I love it when something is good for Sam and he thinks it is a total treat!
I came up with this Chocolate Dipped Strawberry smoothie that satisfies Sam’s taste buds even as it boosts his nutrition (I LOVE it too!). This is a perfect creamy blend and it’s slightly sweetened—making it a perfect snack for mother and son!

Kids aren’t the only ones who need calcium, but their intake of it makes a lifetime of difference. The more healthy bone you have at the peak of bone mass (between the ages of 18 and 25), the less likely you are to break a bone or develop osteoporosis later in life. Boys aged 9-13, girls aged 9-18, women aged 50+, and men aged 70+ are not meeting their daily calcium requirements from diet alone, according to the National Institutes of Health. Adding foods rich in calcium can help.
