Every Tuesday till early September we’re going to be featuring a budget themed dessert table or tablescape from the talented women who have graciously volunteered to take on our Boy Bash on a Budget Challenge. And we’re even going to throw our own work into the ring from time to time and follow the same budget confines. Every participant gets the Spaceships and Laser Beams Collection of their choice + $50 for a dessert table or $20 for a tablescape. They can also use anything they are able beg or borrow or make themselves.
Today’s Boy Bash on a Budget Challenge party is a combined effort betweeen Amanda of Red Wagon Events and Larissa of Sweet on Parties. They joined forces to do an incredible dessert table and a tablescape using our Cowboy Cool Collection, which was designed by Catherine. Amanda did such a great job summarizing the event that I am going to let her tell you all about it (her words are in italics). Today’s post is about the dessert table and we’ll be back next week with the tablescape they created.
The table was located on my parent’s property, under a very Australian Gum tree and looking across into some long grass. The most expensive buy for the table was the hessian fabric but searching the $3 per meter section at your fabric store is a great place to find fabrics, in red, blues and oranges, all perfect to match this cowboy theme. Larissa again put her sewing skills to good use and made a placemat diamond for the table to tie all the printables and the party together.
The hint to making this table come within budget was the use of a lot of store brought goods and using props from previous parties.The positioning and use of props (including a borrowed cowboy saddle, bridal and hay bales) made this very inexpensive table look a lot more expensive than it was.
Now whilst not everyone has a set of three stools at home, a bit of a search from trash and treasure markets can find similar props to elevate goods on the table to make them stand out. Old wooden buckets and boxes are perfect is raising desserts of the table and displaying them and are inexpensive.
Larissa made gorgeous vanilla bean sheriff badge cookies, choc chip vanilla cupcakes with chocolate frosting (I am still craving these!!) and delicious mini lemon meringue tarts. All of which can be made inexpensively at home, or if you’re not a cook like me, substituted for something similar at the bakery.
I made little haystacks which were just chocolate, fried noodles and two tablespoons of peanut butter, obviously not to be served in anyone has an allergy to peanuts! But a very easy, quick and cheap to make.
I also made chocolate ripple cakes in a jar (choc ripple biscuits and cream) and orange jelly in jars. All decorated with twine and wooden spoons these were made for under $7.
Store brought candy in jars (previously owned – but can be purchased from Sweet Style) included jaffa’s, raspberry chocolate bullets, lasso pretzels, caramel saddles and choc chip cookies.
Apples in a wooden barrel were really cheap and a great healthy snack on the table that we are still enjoying at home.
My drink dispenser kept the apple and raspberry cordial cool and again little juice bottles brought from Woolworths (a supermarket in Australia) are the perfect size for little hands.
