Spaghetti Pie Recipe

By  |

I love to make spaghetti pie for my family when we need a spin on everyone’s favorite dish. This is not only one of the best casseroles, but it’s a simple, baked take on the Italian classic.

Spaghetti pie can fit any family. I like to make mine with ground beef, but I know some who prefer it with ground pork sausage. Either option is delicious. It can also be made meatless.

For another fantastic twist on spaghetti, make sure you try our baked spaghetti recipe. If you love pasta recipes, you have to also check out our baked ziti and our easy lasagna casserole

What is Spaghetti Pie?

I like to think of spaghetti pie as a cross between classic spaghetti and lasagna. In the end it becomes a sort of baked spaghetti deep dish casserole.

The similarity to lasagna is in the layers of the casserole. Instead of using long lasagna noodles, I use classic spaghetti noodles. The spaghetti noodles become the base or crust of the dish.

Next, you have the meat sauce. (which can also be meatless if you prefer) And finally, the cheese. I like to use cottage cheese as another layer in my spaghetti pie, but you can substitute for ricotta as well. The top layer is melted mozzarella.

Finally, all of this deliciousness is baked into a tasty casserole.

Spaghetti Pie Ingredients You Will Need:

For the crust:

  • 6 oz of cooked spaghetti noodles
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup of grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 eggs (beat well)

For the filling:

  • 1 pound of ground beef or pork sausage
  • 1/2 cup of chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped green pepper
  • 1 cup (8 oz) cut up tomatoes (I like to use fresh tomatoes but you can also use canned)
  • 1 6 oz can of tomato paste
  • 1 tsp of sugar
  • 1 tsp of dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp of garlic salt
  • 1 cup of cottage cheese
  • 1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese (shredded)

How to Make Spaghetti Pie

For the crust:

First, cook your spaghetti noodles. Once cooked, mix the noodles with butter, parmesan cheese, and the well beaten eggs. Form this mixture into a crust in a 10-12 inch pie plate.

For the filling:

Step two is to cook the ground beef (or pork sausage) with the green pepper and chopped onion together until the peppers and onions are tender and the meat is browned. Drain the peppers and meat.

Next, add in the tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, oregano, and garlic salt. And heat through. You will end up with a meat sauce.

After this, preheat the oven to 375 degrees in preparation for the next step.

Putting it all together:

First, spread the cottage cheese over the spaghetti crust. Fill the crust with the meat/sauce mixture that you made in step two. Bake the crust and meat sauce for 20 minutes at 375 degrees.

When finished, remove from the oven and sprinkle with the mozzarella cheese. Then, bake for another 5 minutes longer or just until the cheese melts.

What to Serve with Spaghetti Pie

You can’t have spaghetti without the garlic bread! Spaghetti pie is no different. I love to serve it with fresh baked garlic bread or our easy homemade dinner rolls. You also MUST HAVE a good Ceasar salad on the side.

I always serve with a side of fresh grated parmesan cheese as well, for the cheese addicts in the group.

Can you freeze spaghetti pie?

One thing I love about pasta dishes, is the ease of saving them as leftovers or freezing an entire dish for later use.

Spaghetti pie is no acceptation to this. It freezes very well and with only about 20-25 minutes for baking time, it makes for an easy dish later!

For freezing, I like to use a large ziplock freezer bag. I cover the dish in tin foil first, and then put it into the freezer bag. When I’m ready to bake it, I take it out to thaw beforehand. I try to use it within about a month of making the dish.

I truly believe you can’t go wrong with the classic Italian dish that is spaghetti. But, even the classics sometimes need a bit of zest and creativity.

Spaghetti pie is the perfect way to serve a family favorite with a bit of twist. And it’s sure to please everyone at the dinner table.
