Kid’s Party Food: Apple Turtles

By  |

Kids’ party food doesn’’t have to be all cake, cookies and candy! Even a party loving mom can’t allow too many pieces of birthday cake or repeated visits to sweet dessert tables. As I’ve considered what other party food options to offer kids, I’ve been looking at fruits and vegetables a whole new way: an orange is no longer an orange; it is a monster head! A strawberry is actually a mouse. Apples morph into turtles. Kids seem much more attracted to fruit and vegetables when they’re in fun shapes. I’ve found this also works for the everyday with my son, Sam. Kids’ party food shapes are a great way to pique kids’ interest in healthy fruit and veggies. I know Sam is much more willing to eat fresh food since we’ve been playing with it.

Usually I hurry to get the daily kitchen chores taken care of myself, in hopes that I’ll have more time to do something special with Sam. I’ve started including him in more of the food prep. Since we’ve been working together in the kitchen, I’ve found that we end up having “extra” good times just taking care of the regular dailies. We’ve had a lot of teasing and laughter plus I’ve found I can slip in some educational moments to capitalize on childhood’s curiosity.

Recently, while we were washing our fruit we had another discussion about germs and why hand washing is important (I think he is finally getting that lesson down!). We decided the green Grannie Smith apples we were cleaning reminded us of turtles. Then Sam’s imagination took over and we ended up with these turtles. You can check out our complete how-to at B-Inspired Mama where I first talked about this.

Of course Sam had questions about turtles after this.  Siri and Google are wonderful resources for moms of little guys with lots of questions! We learned that unlike bird eggs, turtle egg whites (albumin) are truly white and they don’t coagulate when they’re cooked either. The turtle egg yolks cook similarly to bird eggs. Sam and I both found this very interesting but then he declared he wouldn’t EVER eat turtle eggs.

I didn’t dare tell him about turtle soup!

Stephanie is in love with a boy named Sam. He has taught her that it's okay to jump first and look later, to wear a dirty shirt to the park and to decide that today is a good day to take a nap in your rubber boots. She hangs out here blogging at Spaceships and Laser Beams and at our printable party shop on Etsy.
