With Valentine’s Day and Family Day back-to-back, matters of the heart are front and center this weekend! It’s a great time to lavish attention on each other. Although Family Day isn’t a major holiday, it sure is a welcome pause during winter’s grip.  The official declaration of “It’s Family Day” feels like a free pass that says “Have fun. No chores allowed today.”

We’re planning on a low key weekend and cozy family time. Mike, Sam and I are going to loll around in our P.J.s…for an unspecified period! We’ll do some simple food prep together. We’ll eat. We’ll probably play a few games with Sam. I know we’ll laugh because Sam is always saying and doing things to amuse us. This break from the everyday pace of busy is a welcome respite—it’s good for body and soul.

I think when you become a parent you recognize you need…and want…to take better care of yourself so you can be there for your family. Mike and I have been making an effort to eat better and do the exercise thing.  I admit Mike is better about exercise than I am but I feel good about the heart healthy menu changes I’ve made. We’re eating more nutritious foods and fewer empty calories. Since eggs are considered one of nature’s most nutritious foods, I’ve been including more of them in our diet. An egg is a great protein source and it only has about 70 calories, plus it’s loaded with vitamins and minerals…something like 14 essentials.

One of the meals we’ll fix this weekend will be hamburgers with hidden vegetables. Why hidden? It’s another way to get more nutrition into kids like Sam. He LOVES hamburgers but his weak stomach and strong imagination won’t allow him to eat one if he sees anything in it. I mean ANYTHING—like spices or chopped onions. This recipe not only has onions, it has carrots or sweet potatoes. Sometimes it has both!

Burnbrae Farms Simply Egg Whites

Hamburgers with Hidden Veggies


  • .500 kg ground pork
  • .500 kg lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup pureed sweet potatoes
  • 1 small onion finely grated
  • 1/2 cup chili sauce
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup Burnbrae Farms egg whites


Mix up everything in a bowl. Put parchment paper on a baking sheet, make and place the hamburger patties on the parchment. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes for well-done burgers.

This makes a dozen large hamburgers. Even the leftovers taste good!

The pace of everyday sometimes gets too busy. Mike and I have talked about the craziness of our schedule lots of times, but usually we conclude that it’s worth it to reach our goals. Taking a day or two here or there, like Family Day weekend, is a great way to push the family re-set button. Here’s to happy hearts on Valentine’s Day, Family Day and every day!
