We love birthday parties around here—and seeing all the birthday cakes and decoration ideas is awesome! Even though it takes effort and energy (our own and the power company’s!) to pull a celebration together—it matters. With the pace of life and families going in several directions every day, I think it’s important to hit the pause button and celebrate each other, especially on birthdays.

Five Layer Birthday Cake

Just about everyone I’ve talked with recently has bemoaned how fast this summer has flown by. That got me wondering why this season has seemingly disappeared so quickly for so many. It seems everyone is busy with responsibilities and I know there are a lot of distractions with social media, too (yea if you’re distracted by Spaceships and Laser Beams :)).

I once read something about time perception that resonated with me. The idea was that as we mature, we do a lot of our everyday lives with routines. Established routines can be good; they bring an order and ease to chores. We think about other things (the next to-do?) while we mindlessly accomplish what’s in front of us. But when we get through so much of our time like that, we perceive that time is going faster. The balance to that is to be more mindful…to focus on what we’re doing at the moment and time seemingly slows down. Interesting, huh?

So, one of my take-aways is to celebrate each other—frequently—and especially on birthdays! Guess I’m not the only one who likes to celebrate the everyday because a recent survey by Enbridge reports that 80% of Canadians over the age of 18 agree that it’s important to celebrate life’s simple moments, like a birthday. I bet that number is even higher for the under 18 crowd! 63% of Canadians think having a cake makes your birthday more special.  And this one surprised me:  65% of Canadians still make a birthday wish when they blow out their candles!

The Enbridge purpose is to help fuel quality of life by delivering the energy that makes many of the everyday things happen. They aren’t there, baking the cake for you…but the energy they provide is what makes the cake bake. Enbridge has been delivering natural gas in Ontario for over 165 years, making the everyday more memorable. They’ve filmed a really cool 100 Birthdays video to encourage people to take time to enjoy life’s special moments—like birthdays. Take a couple of minutes to watch. You’ll not only see a sweet parade of birthdays from one hundred to one, you’ll see one hundred custom birthday cakes!

And in the spirit of celebration, I’m sharing this five layer birthday cake recipe!
