Dorm Room Care Package Ideas

By  | Last Updated:

Dirty Rice Crispies are a delicious treat.

I didn’t always enjoy autumn like I do now. It used to mean nose-to-the-grindstone. I’m glad those days are history. Nowadays I can kick through piles of leaves, peruse farmers’ markets, and pause in the kitchen for a little creative baking and making something, like these Dirty Rice Crispies. Not only are they delicious, they’re perfect for mailing when you want to send some busy university student a care package. I have a list of suggestions for items you can also include. A shout out to Febreze and Socialstars for sponsoring this post and giving me a fresh idea.

There’s no denying university life is an exciting season. It can be fun, but it’s also hard work.

And when you’re adjusting to all new routines, rules, and relationships, something from home is more than a little comfort.

That’s the way I remember it.

Even if your kids aren’t bound for university yet, there are nieces and nephews and your former favorite baby-sitter to think of.  Some days just knowing a friendly face is thinking of you makes the day brighter. That’s why I love sending care packages.

How to Make Dirty Brownies

Care packages don’t have to be extravagant to be special. Whether it’s a single box of cookies or a themed group of items, I guarantee it will be a welcome piece of mail.

Personally, I like to decide on a broad theme because it helps me come up with ideas. “Study time” could mean I send fun pencils, a notepad, a special coffee blend, and cookies.

Febreze Small Spaces for Rooms

“Take care” can go different directions. It might include personal toiletry necessities and cookies or practical items like dust cloths and Febreze SMALL SPACES … and cookies (notice a trend?).

Dorm rooms can get pretty funky. Febreze SMALL SPACES uses OdorClear tech to eliminate odors, not just cover them up, in a 10’ by 10’ sized room (or smaller—think laundry basket or closet, for example).

And you don’t need a degree to use it so even uninitiated housekeepers can manage to pop the SMALL SPACE scent refill into the device. When it clicks, it’s activated. Just tell them not to use the refill if it’s been punctured or cut open.

The adjustable scent refill lasts about a month so you can send a few refills to your favorite student, too…along with a batch of cookies. Hey, I’m just speaking from an appreciative voice of experience!

Here are some of my best suggestions for winning dorm room care packages.

Dorm Room Care Package Ideas

Let’s get practical…

  • Personal care items (shampoo, toothpaste, lotion, cologne, etc.)
  • Stain removal pen
  • Febreze SMALL SPACES
  • Microfiber dust cloths
  • Sewing kit
  • First aid kit (antibiotic cream, band aids, headache remedy, etc.)
  • Duct tape (because duct tape can help hold everything together)
  • Small LED flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Highlighters, pens, mechanical pencils
  • Notepad
  • Journal

All that studying makes you hungry…

  • Cookies, snacks, dried fruit, popcorn, nuts
  • Packs of cocoa mix, tea, coffee
  • Canister of protein drink
  • Gum, mints

A little bit extra…

  • Gift cards (local grocery, restaurant, iTunes, etc.)
  • Book light
  • Deck of cards
  • Fun pair of sock
  • Flip flops
  • Travel umbrella

Just because…

  • Photo of Dad and Mom (or you!) with “emergency” cash hidden behind the picture
  • Notes of encouragement
  • Canister of silly sayings, inspirational quotes (to pull out as needed)

Now that the days are cooler and trees are showing a fringe of color, not once do I have to think of the next exam or paper to turn in. The grindstone may still turn, but my nose isn’t on it! You’ll find me romping outdoors with my dogs, taking walks with my guys, and curling up with a good book at the end of the day. And eating a cookie.
