Backyard Entertaining Ideas: Blueberry Lemonade

By  | Last Updated:

After much longing for summer’s blue skies and green grass, it is finally here!

During the winter when I’m looking out the windows and wishing for summer, I seem to forget about the yard work that multiplies in the sunshine. I am not complaining about the chores but there is a lot to do to ready our yard for summer season enjoyment. Fortunately our front yard is in good shape, but the back yard—where we do most of our summer entertaining—has needed some love. While I’ve been wrapping up agency commitments there hasn’t been time for gardening but this week we carved out a few hours to weed and prune. We even started our bubble rock fountain so according to Sam, King of the Rock, that means it is officially summer season at our house!

Our back garden is in full sun so it’s always blazing hot back there. We put in a covered deck a few years ago and even planted a tree but since this wasn’t a day for lounging under cover, it meant it was time to break out the Banana Boat® sunscreen. I love that stuff! Banana Boat® tests its products for seven conditions: sun, pool water, ocean water, wind, sweat, sand and extreme heat. Banana Boat® has us covered! I’ve chosen the Banana Boat® Sport Performance spray this season so that makes it especially easy to reapply every couple of hours when we’re outside. It gives me a lot of confidence that our family will be UVB protected.

After all of our hard work in the garden, I made a delicious blueberry lemonade. Have you ever tried it? You should—so refreshing! Here’s how I make it.

Blueberry Lemonade Recipe

  • In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup of blueberries, ½ cup of sugar and 1 cup of water to a boil. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Remove it from the heat and strain out the skins.
  • Juice 4 lemons.
  • Add 2 quarts cold water to a large pitcher and stir in the blueberry and lemon juices.
  • Serve or chill.

We still have another day’s worth of work to do before our back yard and garden will be ready for company but I’m actually looking forward to getting out and playing in the dirt some more. We’ll probably have to have blueberry lemonade again…and for sure we’ll wear Banana Boat® sunblock because this year I’m determined we will have a great looking back yard and we will not look like peeling lobsters!

Stephanie is in love with a boy named Sam. He has taught her that it’s okay to jump first and look later, to wear a dirty shirt to the park and to decide that today is a good day to take a nap in your rubber boots. She hangs out here blogging at Spaceships and Laser Beams and at our printable party shop on Etsy.
