A Back to School Dessert Table

By  |

It’s that time of year when families and teachers are planning fun ways to celebrate the return to school!

A back to school dessert table is a fabulous way to raise excitement for school and learning.

Today’s dessert table inspiration comes from the talented Maria of Sweets Indeed. You may recall her gorgeous vintage hot air balloon dessert table, featured previously on our site.

As Marie shared, this school themed dessert table was actually part of a charity event with Jayneoni Moore Children’s Fund and the company Leapfrog (it was even covered on People.com).

Boys and girls alike will give two thumbs up for these classy ideas for celebrating learning.

What’s not to love about DIY book cake stands, crayon and pencil embellished treat jars and school themed treats? Enjoy the photos from the Pixel Studio.

Using a near rainbow of colors, Maria created a striking backdrop by covering foam core with corrugated packing paper and accenting it with an abundance of colorful paper medallions, globes and tissue poms.

The paper embellishments provided a great surface for adding word strips with the charity event’s motto:  “inspire, believe, educate”.

Can you spy the school themed accents, also included in the colorful pom and paper medallion installation? I see apples and a school bus.

Color coordinating plaid fabric added that prep school feeling to an aqua table cloth.

Ingenious serving pieces were created for displaying all of the sweet treats.

My personal favorites from all of the DIY décor elements are the cake stands made from two differently sized paper mache books—a larger one for the base, and a smaller one for the top tier—that Maria painted.

Maria carefully inserted a dowel through the centers of each book to create the perfect two-tiered dessert platforms.

Aren’t the results of some paper mache and a little paint fantastic? What a fun nod to books and reading.

The book inspired dessert stands were perfect for displaying a variety of lovely cupcakes.

Guests could choose between chocolate expresso cupcakes with adorable school inspired fondant color crayon toppers or black and white cupcakes with the sweetest fondant apples.

Which would you have chosen?

Notice the darling library card food labels?

Each library card has the name of a children’s book in addition to details about the sweet treat on display.  What a clever styling detail!

Another favorite detail from this back to school dessert table is the cupcake cubby.

Backed with penmanship inspired paper, sweet red apple cupcakes provided a great pop of color and brought in a vintage school vibe.

Bonus—the cupcakes were vanilla bean.

It wasn’t too long ago that students really did take apples to their school teachers. And who could forget daily penmanship practice?

The sweet details really hit the school theme home.

Imagine whip cream, chocolate mousse/pudding, and cake all beautifully layered in individual portion-sized cups.

Heavenly, right?

These scrumptious layered chocolate dirt cake dessert shots found their home on the dessert table on top of the cupcake cubby.

I just love the little adorable fondant book worms peeking out of a cloud of whip cream.

What a great idea for a dessert topper. They were created by Vanilla Bake Shop.

I’m sure guests were smitten by the cute little facial features. This is one worm-topped dessert that I’d be willing to dig into, no questions asked.

Just in front of the cubby, precious edible ABC blocks were lined up in a row.  Would you believe they were made from marshmallows covered in chocolate?

Colorful frosting details such as letters and numbers were added to each.

I don’t know about you, but they would make me a little more motivated to learn my alphabet and basic counting numbers.

Marie shared a great tip for her candy kabob display.

She likes to upcycle cans and plastic containers, adding embellishment to coordinate with the theme.

For this party, she hot glued pencils to the outside, making a great theme appropriate jar in which to display her candy apple kabobs.

I love the creativity and the budget-friendly display piece.

Setting the bar high for dessert tables means having an abundance of tasty treats from which guests can choose.

Marie definitely hit the mark with a plethora of yummy options.

The dessert table was rounded out with a plate of cheerful yellow school bus and star sugar cookies.

The royal icing details couldn’t be cuter! And how fun are the gold-glittered frosting A+s and other school sentiments topping the star cookies? Picture perfect!

If this dessert table didn’t delight little scholars-in-the-making, I am not sure what else could.

Book worm cupcakes, candy apple kabobs and the cutest DIY book inspired cupcake stands make this back to school dessert table in a class all its own.

What a wonderful dessert table for an even more wonderful cause. The table definitely makes the grade! We give it an A+ and lots of gold stars.
