A Monsters, Aliens and Robots Boy’s 2nd Birthday Party

By  | Last Updated:

Monsters, and aliens and robots, oh my!  This little boy’s 2nd birthday party by talented mom and photographer, Maria Healey, is full of so many fun DIY ideas.  You’ll love the bright preppy colors Maria chose for the invitations, dessert table decorations, coordinating treats and take home party favors.  A monsters, aliens and robots birthday party is a unique theme that conjures up images of boyhood’s best imaginative worlds!

It is such a treat to feature this creative party for Maria’s son, Joseph.  You may remember that Maria’s modern world traveler themed baby shower and Joseph’s world traveler 1st birthday party have also been featured previously on Spaceships and Laser Beams.  We love following along with all of the fun party adventures Maria dreams up!

Doing a spin-off of the token phrase, “lions and tigers and bears” from The Wizard of Oz, Maria came up with the “monsters and aliens and robots” theme idea.  Immediately, she chose the eye-catching color scheme of blue, lime green and gray/silver.  Maria worked closely with graphic designer Amy, of Dimply Sweet, who created a darling invitation and coordinating printable package to tie the three key theme elements together.  Don’t you just love the gears incorporated into the printables and styling?

Maria began building her son’s dessert table with an inexpensive DIY polystyrene backdrop. She had the home improvement store cut a large sheet into 3 smaller sections which she then spray painted in her party colors and attached together (with push pins!).  Colorful pennant banners were strung. Balloon clusters were displayed on each side and paper fans were hung to add a festive and custom look to the backdrop.  The focal point was another DIY element, a faux galvanized metal letter Maria creatively designed from dismantling cardboard and adding a metal spray paint finish to it.  Genius, right? To the front of her table, Maria added a no sew fabric garland that she made by using a rotary cutter and cutting mat to easily cut fabric strips. I love how the garland effectively ties all of the bright colors together.

The top of the dessert table was full of darling after-Halloween clearance finds!  From an alien balloon to a googley-eyed monster puff ball to a DIY robot made from tin cans and a few craft supplies, this table had so many fun theme coordinating accent pieces.  In addition, the adorable themed treats were creatively displayed.  Gourmet cupcakes by HyVee were dressed up with custom toppers by Creativities Galore. I love the detail work!

Guests were invited to fill cute monster favor bags with treats from the dessert table to take home—a welcome reminder of a great party!  Maria saved enough treats to put together a goodie bag for her husband, too, who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy.

Monsters and aliens and robots? Oh my. If only Maria could click her heels and get that husband home!
