A Boy’s Shenanigans Themed Birthday Party

By  | Last Updated:

When you have an adorable little man who always seems to find trouble, you naturally plan a shenanigans themed boy birthday party to celebrate his naughtiness cuteness. Tonya Coleman, of Soiree Event Design, designed, styled and photographed an unbelievably unique birthday party theme idea with custom party supplies which included an illustration of her son from Something Chic Party and Design. To celebrate the non-stop shenanigans of her little man, an amazing party space was created where kids could safely go crazy, play, eat cupcakes and treats and enjoy the colorful decorations.

When Tonya was trying to come up with a theme for her son’s party, she thought back on his short life and there seemed to be one commonality; he was always pulling off shenanigans! If you follow Tonya on Instagram, then you know she actually documented his mischievous behavior in a series she nicknamed, “Lil’ man strikes again!” It didn’t take Tonya long to decide that this would be the perfect theme to celebrate his little curious and mischief making personality. And celebrate, she did! I love that Tonya took something so personal about her son and designed a party theme around it!

Using a custom portrait illustration based on her son’s picture, Tonya designed her “Shenanigans” printable collection with a superhero look and feel. To give it a unique twist, instead of the normal comic superhero word bubbles, she used phrases she heard her son use quite often: “Uh-Oh!” “Oopsie” and “Who Me?” (As a mom, I know I’ve heard those words a time or two!) Printable designs were a key décor element and really helped create a stylish party environment. I love how Tonya used oversized superhero/comic style word cutouts in creative ways. They made perfect centerpieces, dressed up Mylar balloons and even spruced up the cupcake display.

With a color palette of royal blue, bright green and red, Tonya mixed in a fabulous bit of sparkle using red and blue sequin runners from Koyal Wholesale, paired with denim and royal blue linens! (Who said sparkle is just reserved for girls anyway?) Tonya also added glitter paper to the printable cupcake toppers, Lolli-tags™ centerpiece sticks and favor bag labels and wrapped the cupcakes in royal blue glitter cupcake wrappers from Dress My Cupcake.

A definite party highlight was the “Sugar Overload” dessert table. Guests were able to fill up lime-green, chevron treat bags, customized with party logos, with a number of candies from Sweet Works. There were color-coordinating gumballs, Sixlets and rock candy, all beautifully displayed in a variety of glass jars. Intending to add a little wackiness and fun in her designs, Tonya incorporated chevron in the party décor by using chevron paper straws from TomKat Studio Shop to display her cupcake toppers.

Can you imagine a party space created with throwing toys and drawing on walls as approved activities? A shenanigans themed birthday has to have shenanigans! I love that Tonya thought outside of the box and came up with theme appropriate activities that the kids would naturally enjoy so they could “cause a ruckus”, “make a mess” and “have a ball” without getting into any trouble! Little party guests must have been in heaven! To do this, Tonya transformed her party space into a shenanigans safe zone. She set up several games including a ball toss, ball pit, bowling station and filled the room with lots of balloons.

In addition to the above activities, I love that Tonya had a “play with your food” cupcake decorating station. Guests’ faces surely lit up with excitement as a tray of candy and a plain cupcake was placed in front of each of them to play with. The kids had fun designing creative cupcakes.

When it came to party favors, Tonya really scored big with an album full of the photos she had captured throughout the year documenting her son’s shenanigans. What an amazing one-of a kind keepsake! She made the photo books at Target Photo. Of course, she added her custom touch by gluing one of her party printables to the front cover. They were displayed on a beautiful table full of her favorite framed pictures of her lil’ man’s shenanigans.
