Tips for Planning a Family Movie Night at Home or the Theatre

By  | Last Updated:

I’ve learned a few things being a busy mom to three energetic boys, so when presented this opportunity to share my tips by Mom It Forward Blogger Network, of course I said, “Yes!”

What do you do to relax and have fun with your family? Life is busy. Work, school, church activities, rushing off to ball games, grocery store runs—you know the drill! It’s easy to get busy “doing” and not “being” together.

Tips for Planning a Family Movie Night at Home or the Theatre

We try to regularly plan fun times just for our immediate family. That might mean going to a special event, playing games together or this favorite: family movie night.

After busy weekdays and anticipating upcoming weekend events, Friday evenings are a favored family movie night. Going to the cinema is a regular event in our house. Domingo does a lot of voice work for cinemas, so we’re always tuned to what is available. (Maybe you’ve “talked” with him? When you phone the theatre for movie schedules, his voice is the recording that gives details.)

Finding Dory Pirate's Booty Snacks

This summer Disney•Pixar is releasing the long awaited movie, Finding Dory. You better believe we’ll be there for our theatre’s premiere! My boys were in love with Finding Nemo and can hardly wait to see Dory again.

Pirate's Booty Finding Dory

To join the fun, Pirate’s Booty is teaming up with Disney by releasing limited-edition Finding Dory themed packaging, which features the beloved movie characters. Dory, Nemo and their new friend, Hank the Octopus, join the Pirate and his first mate, Crunchy the Parrot for some delicious snacking. Everyone knows you can’t go to the movie without eating great snacks!

Pirate's Booty Popcorn

Pirate’s Booty Aged White Cheddar is a baked snack made from puffed rice and corn—so it’s gluten-free. It’s blended with real, aged, white cheddar cheese and there are no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. My guys love it.

And you don’t have to wait for a movie to enjoy it! You can find the limited-edition packaging now at leading retailers and through the Pirate’s Booty website. They have a variety of sizes (half-ounce, 7 and 10 ounces) so you’re ready for personal property or sharing!

Pirate's Booty Snacks

I’ve learned there are a few things that make family movie night more enjoyable for all of us whether we’re at the theatre or at home.

  • Comfortable clothes with elastic waistbands cut down on wiggles.
  • Make sure everyone has a good meal before you get there. Movie night is often a restaurant night for us.
  • Explain a little bit about the story before it begins.
  • If your kids are young enough to want a favorite stuffed animal, make sure you take it so they will easily relax and focus on the movie.
  • Take plastic cups to divide snacks into manageable portions.
  • Take empty sippy cups for no-spill beverages and fill them at the concession stand.
  • Make everyone go to the bathroom before the movie starts—whether they think they need to or not!

  • Have kids put on pajamas and do all of their bedtime chores (except brush teeth) before the movie begins.
  • Gather favorite pillows/blankets for sprawling on the floor.
  • Great snacks are a must!
  • Arrange snacks, beverages and refills on a nearby tray so no one (you!) needs to miss part of the movie.
  • Make everyone go to the bathroom before the movie starts—whether they think they need to or not!
  • Darken the viewing room, but turn on something like a night light.
  • Turn off all cell phones and electronic devices.

Family Movie Night Ideas

Whether you’re going to the movie or just want some great snacks, you could win a package of Pirate’s Booty samples and Pirate’s Booty swag. Just post a photo of your kid(s) having fun with Pirate’s Booty. Use the campaign hashtag:  #PiratesBooty, #FindingDory. Get an extra entry by tagging five friends in the photo and encourage them to participate, too.
