Making Recycling a Family Activity

By  | Last Updated:

The lawns have been greening, daffodils have been showing their sunny faces, and we’ve been able to shed our heavy winter coats. At least, that happened last week. Today as I’m writing, I’m watching fluffy snowflakes dance outside my window. I refuse to believe it’s more than a temporary fluke. After all, it’s April. It’s spring. It’s Earth Month and time to help clean up the environment. That means nature should cooperate!

Recycling Together as a Family

Although any season is a good time to take care of our environment, Earth Month is the time many people choose to pay special attention to recycling and cleaning up the environment. In the past, we’ve noticed people loading up large refuse bags of roadside trash during this time.

At our house, we make recycling a regular habit now. It took a little bit of getting used to, but now that we have a system, it’s just a part of life. Even the boys know when they empty a bottle or box, it goes to one of our recycling bins. They even occasionally catch me starting to toss something in the trash instead of recycling. They give me the most triumphant reminder!

Recycle Rally Stickers

Since 2010, PepsiCo has been sponsoring a Recycle Rally. It’s a free nationwide program that provides free resources to encourage recycling interest at K-12 schools. Schools can even earn rewards and prizes for participating, but the greater reward is raising future generations who are tuned to taking care of nature, the environment, and their communities. Kids are learning one bottle, one person, one action really can make a difference.

Recycle Rally Bags

Here at home, we found recycling happens a lot easier with a system. Just tossing everything to be recycled into one bag caused double effort. What has worked for us is having separate bins for plastic, cans, glass, paper and cardboard. I know some communities offer curbside pick-up, but we don’t have that yet. When our bins are full, it’s no big deal to take a ride to our local recycling center for a drop off. It’s a good feeling to know you are making a lasting impact on the environment and modeling responsible behavior for your kids at the same time.
