Ten years ago, Mike and I moved to our home — it was in a new town where we didn’t know anyone. It was far from home for both of us and we didn’t have any family in the area. Flash forward and we now call many of the people on our street some of our best friends. We aren’t always able to make it home for the holidays, so some years we host a “Friendsgiving” at our house for Thanksgiving. This is a beautiful time to reflect on what we’re thankful for and nurture our relationships. I am blessed to be surrounded by people who Give Extra to me everyday so that my life is even better in so many ways.

Friendsgiving Chili Bar Idea #ExtraGumMoments #CBias #Shop

This weekend, we gathered together some great friends to enjoy a chilli bar together. Chilli is one of my favorite things to serve at a party like this — it can keep warm without me fussing over it, plus it’s easy for everyone to serve up in a buffet style. My recipe includes a hint of maple syrup, so it’s not too spicy for our kids to eat. One dish that all the guests love? Perfect!

Friendsgiving Dinner Party

Friendsgiving Printable

For party decor, I kept things simple with an easy polka dot background. I used an old, wooden ironing board that I found at an antique store for the set up. This is one of my favorite finds ever and it is SO versatile!

Chili Bar Decoration Ideas

I hung two printable images that I framed as part of my back drop. I added height by arranging a bouquet of reeds and pine cones to set next to my large, milk white glass rooster.

Biscuits for Chili Bar

I used simple, white bowls for serving but added pops of color with the patterned yellow and red napkins. I also incorporated a matching pattern into the bowls that held cheese and sour cream to top the chili. Biscuits were offered on a milk white serving dish.

Easy Chili Recipe

I love the bright pop of blue that comes from the pot. {Added bonus: my chilli simmered all day in the pot, then I served in it — one dish clean up!}

Friendsgiving Easy Thanksgiving Meal Ideas

The easy set up allowed for everyone to serve themselves and enjoy the meal together. It was nice to catch up with each other since this time of year can be so busy. We also reflected on what we’re thankful for and what we anticipate happening in our families during the coming year.

For dessert, I created pumpkin spice cheesecake shots in clear cups. They were the perfect size to finish off our meal.

Extra Gum Party Favor

Extra Party Favor

Our meal this year was actually inspired by Extra Gum and their Give Extra, Get Extra campaign. I had picked up some packages of Extra Gum to give to guests after our meal as little favors. Even though I love them all, let’s be honest: who really wants to smell onion breath while you’re talking?! 😉 To make the packages even more special, I created a little printable “Give Extra, Get Extra” label for each one. I know that when our friends reach for their gum over the coming days, they’ll see the packaging and be reminded of our Friendsgiving together. You can download the free printable Give Extra, Get Extra label here.

Food Bank Donations

I decided our Friendsgiving was the perfect opportunity to “Give Extra” to our local food bank. We are blessed with such an abundance in our lives, I wanted to encourage all our friends to give along with us. Everyone brought non-perishable food items, which we collected in a basket to donate to our local food bank. Sam happily helped me deliver the goods to the food bank this morning. It felt good to give extra to help those in need during the Thanksgiving season.

Easy Turkey Chilli

  • 1/2 lb ground turkey
  • 1 can lentils
  • 1 can black beans
  • 1 can red kidney beans
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • salt to taste

  1. Slightly cook turkey on medium heat.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and simmer on low heat for about 45 minutes.
  3. Stir periodically to ensure flavors mix and nothing burns.
  4. Serve and enjoy!

Note: We enjoy topping ours with shredded cheese and sour cream.

Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake

  • 10 graham crackers crushed
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

  • 2 blocks cream cheese
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice

Whipping Cream Topping

  • 1 small carton whipping cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • chopped white chocolate to garnish

  1. Mix together crust ingredients and press into the bottom of shot glasses.
  2. Blend together cheesecake ingredients until smooth and spoon into shot glasses. Put into fridge and chill overnight or until set.
  3. Blend together first three topping ingredients until stiff peaks form. Spoon into piping bag with a large French tip and pipe onto chilled cheesecakes.
  4. Top with white garnish and return to fridge until ready to serve.

Your turn: how does your family Give Extra during the holidays?

Stephanie is in love with a boy named Sam. He has taught her that it's okay to jump first and look later, to wear a dirty shirt to the park and to decide that today is a good day to take a nap in your rubber boots. She hangs out here blogging at Spaceships and Laser Beams and at our printable party shop on Etsy.
