The weather this spring and summer has been beautiful — full of lots of mild days with warm breezes, perfect for playing outside. However,  we’ve also experienced more thunderstorms than usual. There have even been some tornado touchdowns! {I’ve been so thankful for our Duracell Batteries during the storms!} While listening to rain is delightful, stormy weather with young kids can be a little stressful on everyone.

Flashlight Games for Kids

Many years ago, I worked in emergency management, so I know the importance of being prepared. As part of my job, I shared the importance of having an emergency kit and what to do during a storm or power outage. Unfortunately, this has turned into a case of do as I say, not as I do. I’ve felt a lot of guilt about not being properly prepared, especially since we’ve had Sam. After the weather we’ve had this year, I decided it was time to take care of this. I headed to Walmart to finally develop our own kit.

Games to Play with a Flashlight

Since I wanted to keep Sam calm and comfortable, I made sure to include items that I knew would entertain him. I included his own special flashlight that uses three AAA Duracell batteries that he can use. I also created a card that has games we can play with a flashlight as well. Feel free to print this for your own kit.

Flashlight Games to Play with Duracell Batteries

We had our first chance to try our kit during a storm this past weekend. Mike helped Sam load the batteries into his new flashlight and then we played several games together. I was amazed at how much more peaceful we all felt. Sam was at ease and busy having fun instead of worrying about the noises outside. Because he was relaxed, it was easier for Mike and I to stay calm as well. I wish we had done this much sooner!

Stephanie is in love with a boy named Sam. He has taught her that it’s okay to jump first and look later, to wear a dirty shirt to the park and to decide that today is a good day to take a nap in your rubber boots. She hangs out here blogging at Spaceships and Laser Beams and at our printable party shop on Etsy.
