Sam has an absolutely terrific imagination. Being an only child, he has plenty of playtime on his own, so he’s always come up with creative adventures to enjoy with his toys. While he does love to play games on our iPad or computer, we’ve always encouraged him to imagine and move as well. Occasionally, I share some of our favorite picks for best toys here on the blog. Today, I have a classic toy that Sam has adored playing with: the Melissa & Doug Classic Toy Car Carrier.

Target Toy Emporium, Available Online

The¬†Target Toy Emporium {available online} has an abundance of fantastic toy options, including many items not found in stores. Several of these toys fit right in with our “imagine and move” philosophy for Sam. They are classic toys — some of which Mike and I played with as kids even! — that encourage lots of imagination and activity. As a boy mom, I appreciate the sturdy construction and quality materials. I love seeing Sam discover a new toy, create an adventure with it and get lost in hours of play.

I put sheets of craft paper on the floor for Sam and handed him a bucket of crayons. Together, we spent quite a bit of time drawing roads and bridges and parking lots — plus dinosaurs to stand guard. He also drew a beach, ocean, and a lake. Finally, he added three of his favorite buildings: our house, his school and a toy store. The more he drew, the more his imagination came alive. He loved describing the layout of his “city” and all the things happening in it. With each item he added, he thought of more things to draw in as well.

Kids Activity Ideas

Once his city was built, his new Melissa & Doug Car Carrier went for a drive. He loved driving the big truck since he could transport cars. He also had the individual cars driving all over the city. He started imagining that he was on his way to pick up friends for a trip to the toy store. It’s so fun to listen to him play. I know that what seems like simple playtime is helping him develop and fostering creativity for the rest of his life. As a mom, this is priceless to me.

Stephanie Keeping

Stephanie is in love with a boy named Sam. He has taught her that it’s okay to jump first and look later, to wear a dirty shirt to the park and to decide that today is a good day to take a nap in your rubber boots. She hangs out here blogging at Spaceships and Laser Beams and at our printable party shop on Etsy.
