7 Tips for a Good Night’s Rest #GoToBed

With three active boys, I crave sleep. For four years I was either pregnant or nursing — for a few months, it was both! Looking back, I’m amazed that I was able to function through that time on so little sleep. Thankfully everyone sleeps through the night now. With our busy schedules, I still need a good rest to power through our days.

7 Tips for a Good Night's Rest

In December, I gave up coffee. I was having multiple cups a day… to the point it was unhealthy. I gave it up cold turkey and haven’t looked back. I quickly realized that since I couldn’t rely on caffeine to power me through my long days, I would need to change other habits as well. I started going to bed earlier and drinking more water during the day. Now that the weather is nice, I’m adding in exercise outdoors like riding my bike {talk about getting yourself tired for bedtime!}. These little changes have made a big difference for me. I’m getting the best quality rest now that I have in years!

7 Tips for a Good Night’s Rest…

  1. Make sleep a priority. Until I decided that the only way for me to be healthier was more rest, I was able to say “no” to other things and get myself in bed at a reasonable time.
  2. Develop a bedtime routine. Just like you do with a baby, make yourself a bedtime routine. It can include going to bed and waking up at the same time each day as well as personal care before bed and reading.
  3. Avoid screen time. Don’t fall asleep watching TV or playing on your phone… it will actually stimulate you instead of soothe.
  4. Don’t exercise or eat before bed.
  5. Sleep with a white noise machine or fan on. I can’t sleep without a fan on low — it does wonders to help block little noises!
  6. Keep your room cool.
  7. Sleep on a high quality mattress. A good mattress is high quality and comfortable. It helps support your body properly during the night so you’ll wake up refreshed, not sore.
