Never Think About What to Make for Dinner for the Next Two Months with My Lazy Cooking Bundle
Throwing an incredible budget friendly boy’s vintage comic book super hero birthday party is no easy feat, but Maureen Anders, of Anders Ruff Custom Designs, has some pretty super party planning skills.
Don’t let her graphic designer title blind you from her alter party planning ego. This talented momma knows her way around the discount stores. I can totally see her focusing in on hero-worthy party decorations, favors, cupcakes and treat ideas that would excite any super hero.
You’ll love all of the high impact details.
Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for ways Maureen used custom printables to dress up dollar store finds and even the cake!
- It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s an incredible Avengers inspired super hero party.
- I adore the awesome activities in this super hero 5th birthday party.
To design a dessert table that really wowed guests, but could be accomplished for less than $100, Maureen had to be creative. After all, designer cakes alone can run a few hundred dollars.
Maureen shared that one of her best tips for planning a budget friendly party is to plan early and shop sales! She used coupons, shopped sales and frequented daily deal sites to stock up on party essentials at a fraction of retail price.
She also used basic items she had on hand at home that could be reused, such as white cake stands and platters.
First off, I love the eye catching printable polka dot backdrop. Not only does this bring in the pop art feel, but it’s a much less expensive alternative to fabric backdrops.
The city skyline buildings created from plastic CD crates that Maureen discovered at the dollar store are pure genius. She turned these upside down, stacked them and taped cardstock in each of the sides as the windows. They were only $1 each!
I love the personalization with the super J emblem. It adds a splash of color on the backdrop and brings in that custom feel.
Maureen shared that it now hangs in her son’s room (she definitely got a lot of bang for her buck on that purchase!).
Speaking of signs, the printable banner on the front of the dessert table added fun thematic details and tied the look together, don’t you think?
The dessert choices look amazing, but many of the items are store bought, with simple embellishments added, to make them look like expensive bakery counterparts.
The cake was purchased for $11.99 and with chevron ribbon, Lemon Head candies, printable skyline and super hero emblems added, Maureen produced a cake with a custom feel for under $20!
Basic chocolate bars received a makeover with a printable wrapper.
Layered “super Jell-O” looks impressive displayed in plastic shot glasses from the dollar store, topped with a printable topper. Maureen shares a tutorial for making it on their Ruff Draft.
One of my favorite desserts was the “Kryptonite” cupcakes. White cupcakes from Walmart were embellished with crushed green rock candy to resemble Kryptonite, topped with a printable cupcake topper and displayed in yellow baking cups.
I also loved the homemade Oreos made by Sugar Wood; the custom colors made them extra super! Aren’t the comic style speech bubble picks a fun detail?
Also on the dessert table were the super hero favor lunch boxes with coloring page fronts. These functioned as a party favor and a treat tote as they were filled with fabulous finds from the dollar store that Maureen repackaged with custom wrappers.
Inside the boxes were fun treats: gumballs in cello bags embellished with a party logo; mini candy bars in custom wrappers; trios of Pixie Sticks, dressed up in printable flags; Lemon Heads received a “super sour” logo; plus embellished lollipops and Pop Rocks.
Mini treat bags were filled with crayons so guests could color the front of the lunch boxes while they waited for the movie to start.
Because Maureen loves sending party guests home with great mementos of her children’s parties, there were additional super cool favors. A small favor table was set up with another darling polka dotted backdrop; I love the impact of the oversized comic-style speech bubble accents.
Maureen carried the skyscraper centerpiece idea over to this table, effectively tying the spaces together. T-shirts were purchased on sale and personalized using opaque transfer paper and a printable super emblem from the Anders Ruff shop.
Aluminum water bottles ($1 each), were spruced up with vinyl emblems.
Polka dotted bags were filled with white cheddar popcorn and topped with a super hero “pop” party logo. Individual sized servings of candy and gumballs, with coordinating party logos, rounded out the favor table.
I love the streamlined, fun activities for this party! How exciting is it to see a movie in a theater with your friends?
Maureen shared there is a theater in her area that shows $5 movies all day long. It just happened to be playing the new Super Man movie at the time of Jeffrey’s party. Following the movie, they enjoyed a pizza lunch out before returning home for cake and treats.
Maureen decked out the kid’s table in coordinating chevron fabrics and added drama with another skyscraper building topped with more chocolate bars and cupcakes. At $1 a building, this was a great choice!
I love how plates were layered for a finished look and water bottles were embellished with printable drink wraps. The end product was an eye-catching dining table for some seriously lucky super heroes.
