Dinosaur parties are a particularly popular birthday party theme, and boy do we have a great one to share today! “Dino-mite” is the best way to describe this budget-friendly dinosaur birthday party. Some say parties on a budget are impossible, but Julie at A Reason to Get Together scoffs at that notion. She was able to pull this adorable and creative party together for a six-year-old boy on a fairly tight budget. Read ahead to see how Julie used items she already had on hand to create “rawr-some” decorations, a delicious-looking cake and desserts, and super fun party activities.

Julie laid the groundwork for an exciting dinosaur birthday party by rounding up decorations in browns and greens. Plus, she used a variety of dinosaurs she found at the dollar store to bring in plenty of prehistoric touches.

We love her use of some natural-looking items like wood stumps, ferns, and tall grass. Wooden crates and brown burlap made the perfect setting for a fantastic dinosaur birthday party dessert table.

DIYing many of her own paper decorations kept costs down. IKEA marquee-style frames were filled with letters spelling out R-A-W-R. Using a paper cutting machine, Julie was able to create paper bunting, dinosaur cutouts used to top cupcakes, letters for a dessert table bunting, and even a topper for the cake spelling out the age of the guest of honor.

The dessert table had a simple, clean layout with a display of cute cupcakes and cookies. Julie even made the sugar cookies look like fossils with dino footprints. We love the simple dinosaur cupcake toppers she made as well as the paper party flags. The store-bought chocolate cake looked amazing displayed on a dinosaur green cake stand, dressed up with the DIY cake topper. Jars filled with green Jell-O were tied up in twine and wooden spoons. Candy in colorful shades of green was displayed in apothecary jars.

We love a good beverage station, and this one was so cute! Mason jars were displayed with paper dinosaur-topped stir sticks. Water bottles were wrapped in simple green labels. Party guests had no excuses for being thirsty at this dinosaur birthday party.

Budget-friendly didn’t mean this dinosaur party lacked in the activity department. On the contrary, it was full of “dino-riffic” fun. First on the agenda was making dinosaur fossils out of coffee play-dough that was then stored in a glass jar. The kids chose a jar, rolled out their coffee play-dough, and pressed small plastic dinosaurs into the dough which was then baked during the party.

Next, the kids got to make a stegosaurus out of their handprint (think hand turkeys). Triangles were precut out of card stock before the party that the kids could easily glue to the bodies of the handprint stegosaurus.

After the dinosaur party crafts, the book Dinosaur Roar, by Paul and Henrietta Stickland was read aloud to the party guests. Finally, the party was wrapped up with a dinosaur dance. Guests got to dance like various dinosaurs. Isn’t this party dino-mite? Full of fun and creative details all while sticking to a tight budget. Fabulous job Julie!
