Yummy Grilling Recipes: Sausage & Peppers from Hillshire Farms

This is one of my absolute favorite times of year! We love to entertain and being able to do so outside is wonderful. Mike fires up the grill and I get creative in the kitchen with help from Sam. It’s so much fun to prepare for our guests as a family. We’re always looking for new grill recipes that we can enjoy and serve. I’m especially loving sausage and peppers this spring, especially paired with a delicious cold salad. Mike loves to experiment with food as much as I do, so we had a great time getting ready for a grill outside this weekend.
Friday I stopped at Meijer to pick up a few things for having friends over. I was looking forward to great weather, tasty food hot off the grill and enjoying time with my family as we celebrated Mother’s Day. I picked up Hillshire Farms American Craft Sausage while shopping and was able to use my Mperks coupon — I found the coupon under the “Lunch Meat, Bacon, Sausage & Hot Dogs” section. I started following Meijer on Facebook as well so that I could see the sale previews and recipe ideas that they post.
After grabbing the American Craft Sausage, I headed to the produce section to pick up some fresh toppings and ingredients for my side salad. I love the one stop shopping Meijer offers me so that I don’t have to run all over town for quality products. Saving me time is saving me money! Since the American Craft Sausage is hand crafted, I knew to expect exceptional flavors. They boast the best cuts of 100% pork with real ingredients like jalapeno, garlic and smoky bourbon. There are also no nitrates, no nitrites and no MSG so all I’m serving my guests is great taste. That’s why I knew it was important to pair it with fresh toppings! I also thought it would be fun to try some unique toppings instead of just ketchup and mustard. I set them up in little dishes so that each guest could choose what toppings they wanted to try. I encouraged everyone to pair flavors they wouldn’t normally think of. The evening was full of taste testing and trying to decide who came up with the best flavor. I personally loved mango on mine!
I created a cold sweet potato salad that would compliment the sausage. It tasted really amazing! It was the perfect compliment to spicy, flavorful sausage. I love when an experiment works out so well. 🙂
- 1.5 lbs sweet potatoes peeled and cut into chunks
- 1/4 cup chopped red onion
- 1/page/8 cup toasted pecan pieces
- 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley
- 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar (I use dark but white wouldn’t stain the potatoes)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup crumbled feta
- Boil sweet potatoes for about 6-8 minutes (be careful not to overcook them!).
- When cooked through, strain and let cool.
- Gently fold in the red onion, pecan and parsley.
- Mix together the vinegar, oil and salt.
- Toss into sweet potatoes.
- Add crumbled feta and serve.
We had a great time enjoying our delicious food and visiting. It was truly a wonderful weekend to celebrate motherhood plus enjoy the time outside. The food and company were both incredible. I’m looking forward to many more spring and summer nights spent outside grilling!
