Toys We Love: Star Wars Light Sabers + Sugar Cookies
It’s not even Thanksgiving and my boys are counting down the days ‘til Christmas. They wouldn’t be so eager if they knew I hardly have any shopping done yet. Shh!
Christmas has always been a big deal with our family. I love everything about it—the decorations, special treats, family time, anticipation, gift giving, the Christmas carols. So I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at my boys’ excitement. It must be genetic!
One Christmas I remember my grandparents bought my little brother, who has Down syndrome, a toy that needed batteries. Usually Papa has the batteries in the toys and everything ready to go before Nannie wraps the gifts, but this year somehow they forgot one special toy. Rather than unwrap the gift, Nannie just laughed and wrapped a package of batteries, thinking my brother would open the gift first and then they would get to the batteries. Of course it didn’t work that way. In the flurry of the morning my brother unwrapped the batteries first. Being his usual sunny self, he genuinely thanked them for the batteries. He was quite happy with them. We were all incredulous at his reaction but he said he knew he would have fun “making something go”. Down syndrome? Ha—Up syndrome!
This year, I thought I’d find out which toys my boys want the most for Christmas and a recent trip to Toys “R” Us provided them with all the fodder they needed. They came up with extensive wish lists. Hasbro, Duracell and Disney have teamed up with Toys “R” Us for the season’s hottest toys. You can find all sorts of gift ideas there. I’m amazed at their selection and the prices are great.
Big brother is super-excited about the new Star Wars movie that’s coming out on December 18 and his excitement has been contagious. Little brothers love their new Luke Skywalker light sabers we got from Toys “R” Us (no, I didn’t think it would be a “looking only” trip!).
Now that I have boys of my own, I am amazed that my grandparents only forgot the batteries once! I sure don’t want to disappoint my boys on Christmas morning, but I have forgotten to buy batteries already. This weekend on Sunday, November 22, just in time for the Christmas stock-up, there’s going to be a $3 off coupon for any two packages of Duracell batteries (AA/AAA 16pk, D/C 4pk, 9V 2pk or larger, Quantum AA/AAA 6pk, D/C 3pk or larger) in most Sunday newspapers. On December 13 there will be a $1 off coupon (in most Sunday newspapers) when you buy one package of Duracell Coppertop and Quantum.
Want to be a hero mom? Make these sugar cookies in Star Wars shapes and then take your boys to Toys “R” Us. And something extra sweet for you: one lucky reader will receive a $100 Toys “R” Us gift card and AAA Duracell batteries.
