Salted Caramel Dessert Trio

By  |

We love to spend time with friends at our home. Because we frequently entertain, I have developed a few habits that quickly help me get everything ready for company. One thing I’ve realized is that guests always enjoy a dessert table. If the gathering is for a birthday party or a special occasion I invest more time in the decorations and all the details, but even when friends are coming over for a casual evening, I like to wow them with a mini dessert table.

The busy-ness of the everyday doesn’t always leave time to make an entire array of specialty desserts but I don’t let that keep me from inviting friends over. I’ve found that I can pair homemade recipes with great tasting store bought items and create an impressive and satisfying display for guests.

Sea Salt Caramel Trifle

Salted caramel anything is a trend that seems to pique everyone’s interest so last weekend I put together a salted caramel dessert trio. The sophisticated salty/sweet combo is the current darling of a dessert table! My trio included Vanilla Cupcakes with sea salt and caramel on the side (easy), Caramel Mini Trifles (easier), and Hostess Sea Salt Caramel Zingers (easiest!).

Hostess is making the Sea Salt Caramel Zingers (and Sea Salt Caramel Cupcakes) available now until July 31. If you’ve never had a Zinger, you should try one now while the specialty flavor is available. It’s a moist cake with cream filling, a ribbon of caramel, and a thick layer of chocolate frosting with sprinkles of sea salt. The Hostess brands have been enticing and satisfying generations for almost 100 years so you know they’ve got the taste just right!

For the trifle, I chopped up angel food cake and layered it with caramel and whipped cream, and topped it with coarse sea salt.

And here’s my recipe for the Vanilla Cupcakes:

  • 1 stick butter
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Preheat oven to 350.

Cream butter in sugar. Add vanilla and eggs, one at a time. Beat until light and fluffy. Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Using a spoon, gradually add to wet mixture. Scoop into cupcake liners. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Yields 10-12 cupcakes.
