Opening Day: BBQ Favorites

By  | Last Updated:

You know it’s really springtime when you start hearing about Opening Day of baseball season! I’ve always considered myself a nominal fan who was more interested in watching the people and enjoying traditional baseball fare. Now that Jorryn has joined the ranks of youthful players, I find I’m more interested in the game, too. I count it as just one more way that becoming a parent has changed me!

Opening Day: BBQ Favorites

Did you know that Opening Day used to be an unofficial national afternoon off? There’s all sorts of nostalgia about it, especially for baseball fans and sports purists. It used to be that Opening Day meant a day long, baseball-filled phenomenon. Nowadays it’s seemingly geared more toward TV and advertisers with feature games on two days and nights.

Kingsford Charcoal

Kingsford Charcoal (great for grilling all those fans’ hot dogs and brats) is sponsoring a petition to #TakeBackOpeningDay for the 2017 season. Baseball great, Johnny Bench, is on board, too. The Hall of Fame catcher has made some fun videos to show his support. You can show yours by signing the petition on Kingsford.com.

BBQ Dessert Idea

Meanwhile, fire up your grill and enjoy some classic baseball food. Hot dogs and grilled pineapple sundaes ought to get you cheering!

BBQ Hot Dog

  1. Pile charcoal up on one side of your grill and squeeze lighter fluid over charcoal.  Carefully light the charcoal with a match.  Cover with lid and let charcoal smolder until bricks are white.
  2. On the opposite side of the grill from the charcoal, place your hot dogs.  Cook for 1-2 minutes and flip over and cook on the other side.
  3. Remove hot dogs from grill and place on buns and top with favorite toppings.
