Kids’ Party Food: Red, White & Blue 4th of July Toast

By  |

The Fourth of July and kids’ party food are a big deal in our house, which is what makes this toast so perfect. Independence Day is kind of a big deal around here. We live in a small town and there is a sweet local parade full of patriotic themes. There are fire crackers going off throughout the day. Boys and girls decorate their bikes and ride through the neighborhood where there are lots of barbecue parties and picnics going on. Fun stuff! Of course by evening everybody piles in the car to drive to their favorite fireworks display. Where we park we can usually see a sky panorama that includes sparkles and booms from several sources.

This year, not only will the evening end with a bang, I have a special idea to start the day too: red, white and blue toast! It’s a quick kids’ party food treat, but with all of the fruit…and since it is America’s birthday party…this mom is going to call it part of breakfast. My boys will be thrilled!

Want to try it? This is what you need:

  • Bread
  • Strawberry cream cheese
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Fresh raspberries

If possible, it’s good to rinse your berries beforehand so they have time to dry off before you make your flag. If you do it the night before, put a paper towel on a plate and let the fruit drip dry.

Lightly toast your bread and cut it in half so it is more of a rectangle/flag shape. Slather it with the strawberry cream cheese. On our toast I arranged a half dozen blueberries and 13 raspberries for the stars and stripes on Old Glory. Of course I’d never serve my boys something without making sure it tastes good—so I made a couple of these while they were sleeping—and ate them both! It’s delicious!
