It’s GOOD to be outside again! Spring time sunshine and blue skies not only brighten my mood, they sharpen my appetite! Mike and I invited one of our favorite couples over for an informal BBQ this weekend. They are always fun and insightful so conversation is satisfying and our time together always goes too fast. Do you have friends like that? I always like pulling together a few decorative items for a themed presentation when company comes, but it is especially gratifying when you know your efforts will be appreciated and enjoyed—and that’s the way it was this weekend.
First I made a run into town (Walmart—love that place—they have everything!) to pick up a few ingredients for our cookout, including the New Heinz® Yellow Mustard. Yeah, Heinz. The same Heinz that makes that great ketchup. In fact, youll find it in the same area as the ketchup at major retailers nationwide. You can also find out more by visiting KetchupsNewMustard.com.
Since we were planning to grill brats, I wanted to serve condiments that wouldn’t make the buns all soggy and squishy. From past experience I knew my barbecue sauce and the Heinz Ketchup would be the right textures. I was on the hunt for the right mustard, too. Don’t you hate it when you squeeze the mustard and that thin, watery squirt ruins the bun? Ugh. This Heinz Yellow Mustard is thicker; you don’t even have to shake the bottle and the mustard stays on top of the bun. I like the flavor of this mustard, too. Heinz got the spice-vinegar blend just right with their 100% natural ingredients and stone-ground mustard seeds.
Including a couple of fun food ideas is an easy way to carry a theme. For our BBQ, a paper triangle, a toothpick and half of a lemon suggested a sailboat in my water pitcher. Lemon water is always popular.
Our guests had a laugh over my red pepper octopus that guarded the hummus and guacamole dips.
My favorite potato salad, corn on the cob, chips and roasted banana boats rounded out our simple menu.
Favorite Potato Salad
- 5 medium potatoes, boiled and peeled
- 3 hard-boiled eggs
- 1/4 cup mayo
- 2 tablespoons Heinz Yellow Mustard
Stir and mash with a fork until well blended; season as desired with salt/pepper.
If you’d like to try the banana boats (please do, they’re so good!) use a sharp knife to make a slit right through the banana peel and half way through the banana flesh. Stuff it with small marshmallows and chocolate pieces. Set it on a piece of foil, chocolate side up, and stick it on the grill for 10-12 minutes.
The nautical idea is a classic for summer and because it is popular, it’s easy to find a few pieces to suggest the theme. I used a red lantern and an over-sized nautical knot on my serving table. Instead of linens that flap in the breeze and get stained, I simply covered a large piece of cardboard with decorative paper to dress up the table. Cleanup was a breeze!
A simple but delicious menu, a few nautical themed pieces, and terrific company are all you need to celebrate the great outdoors this summer. Make it easy. Make it fun. Do it often!
How will you celebrate summer? Will you try my potato salad recipe? Dont forget the Heinz Yellow Mustard!
