We’re getting excited to celebrate the big game coming up in a couple of weeks. Our family will be hosting some friends for an evening of food and fun. This year, we’ll be entertaining both adults and kids. My mission as I prepare for our gathering is to create a fun atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. This includes creating some football themed party food. I know you and your guests will go wild for this awesome cake!

Sam and I headed to Walmart to pick up party items. I love being able to pick up both ingredients for our party food as well as party decorations. With such a busy schedule, I really appreciate the ease of one stop shopping.

Candy at Walmart

Snickers Minis

Skittles Candy

For our football themed cake, I picked up SNICKERS® Minis along with Skittles®. A simple vanilla cake with buttercream frosting goes up a notch with colorful candy decorations in a football theme. Plus it’s oh-so-simple to create that you can enjoy plenty of time with your guests! I adore this moist and delicious white cake recipe from Add a Pinch. I top it with a buttercream frosting that is equally easy to make. Definitely a winning combo!

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 5 eggs, room temperature
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup whole milk, room temperature
  • ½ cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons whipping cream

  1. In a standing mixer fitted with a whisk, mix together sugar and butter. Mix on low speed until well blended and then increase speed to medium and beat for another 3 minutes.
  2. Add vanilla and cream and continue to beat on medium speed for 1 minute more, adding more cream if needed for spreading consistency.

Football Field Cake for a Party

Football Party Cake

To create a football themed cake is simple. After frosting the cake, I used yellow, orange and green Skittles for the football field. Surrounding the field, along the sides of the cake, are purple, orange, yellow and red Skittles. “Players” are represented by SNICKERS Minis chocolates on the field.

Pretzel Stick Goal Posts for a Football Party Cake

For goal posts, I melted chocolate by placing chocolate chips in a plastic baggie and placing in a warm dish of water. One they were melted, I snipped the corner off the bag and placed a small dab of chocolate on the end of pretzel sticks. Once the chocolate hardened, I placed the goal posts on either end of the cake.

Finally, I used some leftover buttercream frosting to create goal lines on the cake.

Football Birthday Party Cake

I know it’s going to be a big hit with our guests — and will probably become an often requested treat for future football parties!
