We love to entertaintheres nothing better than a summer evening spent on our back deck with friends! Catching up on everyones life, good food, and lots of laughter satisfies the body and the soul. Casual get-togethers on the deck make entertaining a lot easier. It means you can have all the benefits of fun times with friends without making yourself crazy trying to have the entire house pristine and theme decorated. Sometimes though, you want to kick up the casual just a notch. Thats what I did for our baby shower.
Some of our best friends are from South Asia. We have fallen in love with their culture and weve developed a real affection for the spicy Indian cuisine! Our someday vacation plans include a trip to India. Id love to experience the culture first hand. My imagination shifts the people, the textiles, the music, the animals, and of course the food, into a colorful kaleidoscope.
When the opportunity came up to plan a baby shower, I jumped at the chance. Doesnt a summer season baby shower seem like the perfect time to use a jewel-tone Indian theme? I thought so. A hot, summer night with rich, moody color paired with authentic Indian food and sparkling beverages makes an elegant and exotic party gathering. Pulling off this theme idea is actually quite easy when décor is kept simply elegant rather than extravagant and offering mocktails made with Canada Dry Sparkling Seltzer Water means everyone can enjoy your beverage bareven mama-to-be!
I love the way the medley of colors came together on our table. The mixture of amethyst, rose, and chartreuse in the flowers was complemented by the rich ruby reds, dark purple, saffron yellow and lime green in the beverages. Mixing subtle glass patterns with the texture of wooden bowls offered an organic feel to the display. The wood bowls are a reference to the banyan, Indias national tree. Smokey grey elephants with the luster of silver are another nod to the culture.
Because India is known for its diversity of cultures, languages, and traditions, there are a number of decorative elements that could be included with this theme. I had a hard time deciding which way I wanted to take my decorations. For example, the lotus is the national flower of India, and marigolds are frequently used as symbols of good fortune and happiness. Tigers and peacocks are also representative of India. You could pair tiger stripes with marigolds for an entirely different color palette, or choose one of the many lotus flower colors to partner with the golden greens and blues of peacock feathers.
Ultimately Im glad I decided to go with the jewel tones. I like the richness of the colors and the light of dusk turning into evening with candlelight seemed to electrify the atmosphere. Everyone rambled between conversations on the deck and the house when the uninvited mosquitoes got to be too much.
Traditional Indian dishes like Chicken Dhansak, Lamb Korma, Tandoori Chicken, and Chickpea Masala made up the backbone of our menu. Rice and Naan were tasty sides. And no, I didnt make them. I highly recommend taking advantage of ethnic restaurants when you want an authentic menu! Using take-out makes entertaining a lot easier.
MANGO ORANGE MOCKTAIL
- one bag of frozen mango chunks
- orange juice
- Canada Dry Lemon Lime Sparkling Seltzer Water
- Combine equal parts of mango and water. Puree in a blender until smooth.
- For each glass, fill ½ of each glass with orange juice, ¼ of the glass is filled with mango puree, top with Canada Dry Lemon Lime Sparkling Seltzer Water.
- Garnish with a slice of lime or star fruit.
POMEGRANATE ORANGE AND BERRY MOCKTAIL
- pomegranate and berry juice
- Canada Dry Mandarin Orange Sparkling Seltzer Water
- favorite berries
- Fill ½ of each glass with pomegranate and berry juice.
- Fill ½ of each glass with Canada Dry Mandarin Orange Sparkling Seltzer Water.
- Top each glass with favorite berries (I used strawberries, raspberries and blackberries).
For dessert, I made Pistachio Cardamom No-bake Cheesecake. Yum!
- 2 ½ cups graham crackers
- 1 stick butter (melted)
- combine until well mixed
- press crumbs into the bottom and sides of a spring form pan
- 2 bricks cream cheese
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cardamom
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- pinch of allspice
- Combine on medium speed in mixer, until well-mixed.
- Spoon over crust.
- Put in fridge until set (at least two hours or overnight).
- 1 stick butter
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon of milk
- Mix ingredients on medium speed until fluffy.
- If frosting is too sweet, add more salt, 1/8th teaspoon at a time.
- Using a 2D Wilton tip, pipe rosettes around the top to finish the cake.
- Sprinkle with chopped pistachios.
Dont forget to put on your Nehru jacket and a little themed background music!
