A Back to School Dessert Table

By  | Last Updated:

It’s that time of year when families and teachers are planning fun ideas to celebrate the return to school.  A back-to-school dessert table is a fabulous way to raise excitement for school and learning!

Today’s dessert table inspiration comes from the talented Marie, of Sweets Indeed. You may recall her gorgeous vintage hot air balloon dessert table, featured previously on our site.  As Marie shared, this school themed dessert table was actually part of a charity event with Jayneoni Moore Children’s Fund and the Leapfrog Company (it was even covered on People.com!). Boys and girls will give two thumbs up to these classy ideas that celebrate learning! What’s not to love about DIY book cake stands, crayon and pencil embellished treat jars and school themed treats? Enjoy the photos from the Pixel Studio!

Using a near rainbow of colors, Marie created a striking backdrop by covering foam core with corrugated paper, accenting it with ribbon and an abundance of paper medallions, globes and tissue poms.  The paper embellishments provided a great surface for adding word strips with the charity event’s motto: “inspire, believe, educate”.  Color-coordinating plaid fabric added a prep school feeling to an aqua table cloth.

Ingenious serving pieces were created for displaying the sweet treats.  My personal favorite?  The cake stands made from painted paper mache books!

Maria carefully inserted a dowel through the center of each book to create the perfect display platform for lovely cupcakes with adorable, school-inspired, fondant toppers.  Notice the darling library card food labels:  each card has the name of a children’s book plus details about the sweet treat on display.  What a clever styling detail!

Another favorite aspect is the cupcake cubby.  Backed with penmanship-inspired paper, sweet, red apple cupcakes provide a great pop of color and remind me of an old school tradition.

Just in front of the cubby, precious edible ABC blocks were lined up in a row.  Would you guess they were made from marshmallows covered in chocolate?

Marie shares a great tip for her candy kabob display: upcycle cans and plastic containers, adding embellishments to coordinate with the theme. For this party, she hot glued pencils to the outside, making a great theme appropriate jar to showcase her candy apple kabobs. I love the creativity and the budget-friendly display piece.

The dessert table was rounded out with a plate of cheerful yellow school bus and star pupil cookies.

If this dessert table is an indication of the school days ahead, scholars in-the-making would be inspired! Great party for a great cause!

Stephanie is in love with a boy named Sam. He has taught her that it's okay to jump first and look later, to wear a dirty shirt to the park and to decide that today is a good day to take a nap in your rubber boots. She hangs out here blogging at Spaceships and Laser Beams and at our printable party shop on Etsy.
