Bun in the Oven Boy Baby Shower

By  | Last Updated:

A baby boy shower is such a wonderful way to celebrate life! Send invitations to family and friends, gather supplies for a few decorations, prepare something to eat—sounds simple. BUT, if you really want to have a memorable party, better add a few more steps to the plan! Decide on a theme and think of what ideas will help you carry it throughout the party. Clever consistency ramps up the “wow” and lets guests know you cared enough to fully prepare for them. Can you tie in the cake or cupcakes with your theme? Want to send guests home with a party favor and fond memories? Brittany, of GreyGrey Designs, is an experienced party planner; observing her process in creating a successful party can help you do the same!

Brittany styled this “Bun in the Oven” baby shower for a client. The client did not know her baby’s gender, so Brittany created a theme that worked equally well either way. I love what she did to build this homey, retro style party in red and aqua! A fireplace provides the perfect place to hang the “Bun in the Oven” banner, which Brittany coupled with a pennant style garland. The variety of red and aqua prints is just dog gone cute! The gingham looks great with both the larger scale red and white checked tablecloth and the polka dot ribbons, used to tie on the food labels. Tying the top cloth with jaunty bows produces a little bit of a swag effect and shows the coordinating underskirt.

My favorite piece of this decorating scheme is the little red stove Brittany built. That unique addition is adorable; it adds warmth to the entire visual picture. It’s also a terrific place to serve exceptionally cute cupcakes! Brittany staggered heights of the desserts; that looks more interesting than having everything on one level. Notice how there is a balance to the table, too? The stair-step display on the left produces a counterbalance for the little red stove on the right; it holds cinnamon rolls on a stick. Brittany made another “moment” on the table with the felt cinnamon buns, painted baby blocks and the vintage Mason jar that holds the table service.

The opposite side of the table offers snacks-on-a-stick, in a cute, patterned box. See how crinkle paper looks more “finished” than just sticking them in the box? An array of glass containers, filled with candies (in theme colors!), helps establish the idea of abundance at the table. Strawberry parfaits look enticing with their striped straws and “bun” flags.

For a delightful party activity—beyond eating and talking!—Brittany had a “recipe” card designed (see the oven with a heart?); guests were asked to write a recipe for “baking a new bun”. The recipe box is a Brittany-made project for mom-to-be to keep guests’ advice cards in.

As a final good-will gesture of the day, Brittany made party favors for each guest. Gingham fabric and beribboned jelly jars hold cinnamon roll cookies–more buns–in keeping with the party theme.
