When a theme coordinates from start to finish, its a major accomplishment. This labor of love started with an adorable sock monkey themed invitation and led guests to a party filled with delightful red, white and brown decorations that began in the yard and front porch and moved into the party venue.
To dress up the outdoors, Ricky created cardboard cut-outs of sock monkeys and Gruene painted them. The monkey and handmade birthday sign made a sweet welcome in a big way. And what a fun porch chalkboard greeting too! Its always nice to let guests know that this is the place.
Once inside, youll notice more of these cute handmade monkeys. Charming tables were set up with brown tablecloths, red and white polka dotted wrapping paper, topped with burlap runners painted with stencils to read: Monkey see, monkey do.
Majoring on affordable DIY projects, Ricky and Gruene handmade clay monkeys for the centerpieces and cleverly painted on details to give the monkeys personality. The R & G team recycled tubs from Crayola Air Dry Clay into bases which they painted red. A round wood piece was glued on top and then embellished with scrapbook paper. This made a perfect stage to display the monkeys! Jacks and a ball added a vintage vibe, while a painted paper mache G added personalization.
Several sweet theme coordinating decorations and vignettes were staged around the party space. I love the ripped fabric wreath Gruene created. The fabrics coordinate perfectly and the addition of the sock monkey is precious!
One of my favorite spots is the picture table, topped with a custom name burlap runner. Framed pictures from Gunnars birth year, paired with sock monkeys, made this a fun pit stop for guests to reminisce about Gunnars firsts. The corkboard photo collage was another great party addition, especially for a milestone first birthday event.
Appetizing food and refreshments were a big part of this celebration. Always crowd pleasers, pizza and bottles of old-fashioned root beer were served as the main meal. Glass containers were wrapped with fabric and tulle to hold utensils and basic supplies.
Keeping the menu simple allowed for more effort to be invested in the dessert table. Creative desserts included banana pudding, chocolate covered bananas and a variety of flavorful cupcakes.
You may have noticed the cupcake standsanother inexpensive DIY! Gunners parents used Mason jars in varying heights and filled them with color coordinating candy (gumballs, malt balls and peppermints). They used Epoxy glue to attach a clear dollar store serving platter to the jars, resulting in cake stands of varying heights.
Doesnt the birthday boy look adorable in his custom shirt and party hat? Hes ready to party in his high chair which was decked out in a sweet custom burlap name bunting, with sock monkey ribbon detailing. All of the little details wow! Gunnar got to enjoy his very own smash cakesuch a beautiful polka dotted cake for a fun first birthday tradition!
Wondering what guests did at this darling party? Gunnars parents were smart and held the party at a clubhouse with a pool! This simplified the activity planning as guests could monkey around in the pool and stay cool.
When it was time to head home, guests could pick up their cute party favors. Sock monkey gable boxes from Birthday Express were filled with a variety of favors from Oriental Trading Company: yoyos, bouncy balls, candy and a color-your-own sock monkey. Each included a circle label thanking guests for coming to the party.
Monkey business: what a special 1st birthday party for one fortunate little boy!
