A Boy’s Magic Themed Birthday Party

By  | Last Updated:

Poof!  Another year has vanished into thin air.  How will you celebrate? How about planning a magic themed birthday party like Lydia’s of The Party Wagon? Thrown in honor of her son’s 6th birthday, every detail was magical from the capes to the rabbit in-the-hat on top of the cake! Come see how Lydia worked her own magic in these party photos by Deanna at Zoomworks Photography.

The party magic began before little guests even made it to the front door.  Lydia hand-painted rabbits popping out of magician’s hats on 24 “magic carpets”. She hung them on shepherd hooks to mark the entrance.  Guests would use these to sit on later in the party.

Once inside, the magic really began.  Attendees were outfitted in magician’s capes, designed by First Crush DesignsI love that the capes were reversible with red on one side and black on the other.  There was even a special cape for the birthday boy.

All official in their magic capes, guests were invited to help themselves to spellbinding bottles of “magic potion”.  With the help of glowing orbs (Save On Crafts) and a little dry ice magic, the beverage area looked especially mystical.

The adorable labels on the drinks and party flags on the straws were designed by the talented Loralee Lewis.  You will see some of her other paper designs throughout Lydia’s styling.

To give that magical, mystical feel to the party, Lydia added modular origami stars by Origami Delights to her party décor.  They were hung above the punch bowl and used as table scatter and centerpieces.  Don’t they look cool?

Created by Chef Patrick Dezzi, the desserts may have proven to be the quickest vanishing acts of all! From “full moon magic” whoopie pies to “magic wand” fruit kabobs to “alakazam” cookies and “lucky star” sandwiches, there was no excuse for leaving this party famished.

Desserts were creatively served on a bed of “magic crystals” to match the party colors of red, yellow, and blue.

Additionally, Lydia served pretzels, popcorn, and bugles in “floating wizard hats”.  The cone hats were from Mirabelle Designs.  Lydia hung them from a metal stand using nearly invisible fishing line.

And don’t forget the “abracadabra” cake.  The incredible fondant topper was made by the one and only Edible Details.

A magic party calls for a special kind of entertainment.  Party guests loved being entertained by a real magician as they sat on their magic carpets. When the show was over, the magician treated the children to balloon animals and little magic tricks.

Guests also created their own tricks. “Mix Your Magic” encouraged them to mix primary colors in water to magically create new, secondary colors.

Another station involved putting a toy animal in water to watch it magically grow, and then shrink again, when taken out of the water.

Next up was a “coin trick” station in which a coin was hidden under mini top hats; guests had to guess which hat hid the coin.

Finally, a “magic hat parade” was held (similar to a cake walk).  Winners received a black top hat.

Before guests disappeared, they were gifted with cookies decorated to look like playing cards!  Each was adorned with a vintage-inspired thank-you card (Loralee Lewis).
