Blogging 101: How to Choose a Name for Your Blog
Today’s conversation is brought to you by Name.Kitchen. All thoughts and ideas are my own.
Have you thought of joining the business world via blogging? There are a lot of perks to being your own boss. If youre new to the blog world, youll discover you have quite a few decisions to make. Once you know your service or product, some of the first questions to consider are what should you name your business and how are people going to find you? Theres a new approach to domain naming on the Internet: not-com. Name.Kitchen allows you to create a personally meaningful domain name that can help with name recognition. For example, choices like .PIZZA or .COFFEE immediately telegraph a message that .com does not.
I never intended to own a business, but in 2009, after I had Sam, I was on a years maternity leave from my marketing job. I was plenty busy learning how to be a mom, but I was also experiencing withdrawal from the business world I was so familiar with. My workaholic tendencies kicked in and I decided to open an Etsy shop and start a blog. You could say I jumped in feet first!
My idea was to create a place where moms just like me could celebrate their boys. At the time, you could find amazing sites that catered to moms of girls all over the internet, but boys almost seemed like an afterthought.
The name for my businessSpaceships and Laser Beamscame to me in seconds. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a reflection of the space and sci-fi fanaticism in our house! Actually, Mike came home from work one day and told me the story about one of his co-workers who had a parrot that talked. His owners would say spaceships and laser beams and the parrot would respond with pew, pew, pew, pew. For whatever reasonperhaps my lack of contact with anyone over the age of six months?I thought that was the most amazing thing!
The next day when I was taking Sam for a walk in his stroller, I leaned in close to him and said, spaceships and laser beamspew, pew, pew, pew. Sam erupted with belly laughs, which made me feel like the best mom and the funniest person on earth. When we got home, I got ready to record and tried it again (see it here). It was one of those special things that happens with new babies and it was all our family talked about for days.
Since my Etsy shop and site were a tribute to my son and the joy he brought to our lives, the name Spaceships and Laser Beams was a no-brainer. Since that time Ive thought a lot about whether or not I would change my blog name if I had the opportunity. I was actually asked that very question after speaking on blogging at a local university. A couple of years ago, my answer would have been yes because I thought a keyword rich name such as boybirthdayparties could help me rank higher in Google. So much has changed in the world of SEO so I dont think that is true any longer. Im actually glad I created a unique brand. It certainly looks less spammy.
One thing about my business name that I didnt anticipate is that so many people would spell it incorrectly. Ive seen a lot of Laserbeams and Lazer Beams. Another thing I didnt anticipate is that some people, particularly on Facebook, get mad that my page has nothing to do with spaceships or laser beams, except for the occasional space-themed birthday party or craft idea!
All that aside, I wouldnt change my name of Spaceships and Laser Beams. The reason is closely linked to the advice I give people who are wondering about naming their own blog: its personal, its tied to an amazing memory, and most of all, it is unique. The statistics on the number of new blogs created each day is staggering. Its hard to stand out. When you name your blog something completely generic, or even worse, something that sounds just like another well-known blog, you are doing yourself a disservice.
Im loving the new not-com potential. If there is anything I would change on my url, it is the .com ending. I love the idea of using an extensionlike .eventsso that my blogs brand could be more clearly aligned with the party world. Since these not- com choices are new, there are great names still available to be registered. Name.Kitchen, powered by Donuts, is geared toward entrepreneurs. Doesnt their name even imply all sorts of comfortable, can-do images?
As far as choosing a name for your blog, here a few tips to consider while youre brainstorming:
- Is it something easy to say and spell?
- Is it short and sweet?
- Is it available on social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) so your brand is cohesive?
- What is your passion? Usually that is what you will write about.
- What are the keywords that go with your passion? Play around with adjectives and nouns that benefit your topic and see what sounds fun.
- Think about what will appeal to your target audience.
