Outdoor Hacks We Love
Have you started your fall yard clean-up yet? The mature trees that surround the yard at our new home certainly shed a lot, much to the satisfaction of my boys. Zane and Shay aided and abetted me this weekend with my outdoor chores. Piles of raked leaves waiting to be picked up became scattered by their boy glee. Little stinkers. The guys were having way too much fun for me to fuss about it and it was a beautiful day to be outside anyway.
A new house comes with new needs—like a durable trash can. Actually, I’m finding everything needs to be durable when you have a household full of boys! A new trash can wouldn’t top my list of exciting things to buy, but we needed it. My boys were thrilled. All my life, and I never knew a trash can could be a rocket ship. Wonder if NASA knows?
We bought a Newell Rubbermaid® Roughneck™ Wheeled Trash Can at Home Depot. The wide base makes it stable and inline skate wheels make for smooth moving. There’s a fixed handle, a nice big one, so it’s easy to pull the can around. We used a trash bag inside the can for the yard refuse and there’s a LinerLock™ bag cinch that conveniently keeps the bag in place. It holds a ton of “stuff”—32 gallons worth.
The Roughneck™ is a great value and it’s much more than just a trash-toting rocket. My husband and I debated about which way we’re going to use ours during the off-season:
1.) Outdoor toy storage
2.) Garden tool storage
3.) Pool toys, including the deflated, inflatable pool (so the mice don’t chew on it)
4.) Outdoor furniture cushions (so the mice don’t chew on it)
5.) Boating equipment, including oars, seat cushions, life jackets
6.) Left over lumber that we don’t want to throw away
7.) Cat bed (this from 5-year-old Zane—lay the can on its side with a towel so the outdoor cat can stay dry and warm…and chew on the mice!)
There you have it. With all of the ways to use a Roughneck™, we just might have to buy more than one!
