Our New House & Why We Chose a Real Estate Professional to Help Us Buy It
Should you quit your job, sell your house and then find someplace to live? I don’t know if that works for everyone but eventually it worked for us. I did learn a few things along the way.
When Mike and I chose to leave our established jobs and sell our house, I couldn’t have imagined the frustration and stress we would endure before we found our new home.
Our house was in decent shape before we exhausted ourselves with a huge purge and cleaned and painted every corner and cubby before putting it on the market. We anticipated we would have a series of showings and time to explore new housing options.
Except that didn’t happen. We had no idea our home would sell so fast.
Good news/bad news.
We looked at neighborhoods and narrowed down potential houses while we temporarily lived with Mike’s sister. There was a problem however.
The housing market was HOT.
It was one of the most stressful seasons in my life and looking back, I cannot imagine doing it without a real-estate professional.
We became so desperate to get a house that we just wanted to give up. Forget looking for our dream home—we just wanted a house, any house.
But thankfully our amazing real-estate professional convinced us not to “settle”. He advised us about what would make a great investment and what neighbourhoods made sense for our family.
Now that we’re settled—in our wonderful new neighbourhood in a home that is just perfect for us—I am so grateful for his experience and expertise.
Trust me. It’s more of a challenge to make rational decisions when you’re tired.
Our real-estate professional encouraged us in practical ways and helped me keep my sanity in a frustrating situation. My take-away from our experience:
- Choose a real estate representative that understands where you’re coming from.
- When you’re looking at a house, leave your emotions at the door and remember the practicalities that matter to you.
- Don’t take risks that you’re not comfortable with.
- Read everything before you sign—ask questions if you’re not clear.
- Be flexible in your expectations; have a backup plan.
- Stay cool. Try not to eat too much chocolate.
Now that we are settled in our new perfect-for-us house, it was all worth it. I don’t wear red slippers or click my heels together but with my whole heart I can say, “There’s no place like home.”
